Facebook and Instagram Outage: Technical Glitch Disrupts Thousands of Users

Meta’s Social Media Platforms Encounter Technical Issues Affecting Users

On Tuesday, Meta’s array of social media platforms, encompassing Facebook and Instagram, faced significant technical disruptions, leaving a vast number of users encountering difficulties accessing these services for over two hours.

Meta Platform Outage: Facebook and Instagram Users Encounter Errors

Reports flooded in from users encountering a range of issues, primarily centered around being unexpectedly logged out of Facebook. Upon attempting to log back in, users were met with error messages, such as “Something went wrong. Please try again.” The surge in error reports began around 10:25 a.m. ET on Tuesday, March 5, as per monitoring service Downdetector. By approximately 10:40 a.m., Downdetector had amassed over 500,000 error reports, with approximately 76% of the issues linked to login problems.

Instagram Users Experience Feed and Posting Problems

In parallel, Instagram users faced their own set of challenges, including unrefreshed feeds and an inability to post content on the platform. Moreover, the outage extended its impact to Meta’s Messaging platform and Threads, the company’s messaging application akin to Twitter, which was introduced the previous year.

Meta’s Response and Resolution Efforts

A notice posted on the Facebook Login Status page at 10:17 a.m. ET highlighted “major disruptions,” informing users of the issue affecting Facebook Login services and affirming the active pursuit of resolution by engineering teams. By 12:07 p.m., an update relayed that Facebook Login services were undergoing restoration efforts, with an apology for any inconveniences encountered.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone provided reassurance at 12:19 p.m., announcing the resolution of the technical issue that impeded service accessibility, affirming the company’s swift action in addressing the matter.

Elon Musk’s Remark on the Outage

Elon Musk, the prominent tech mogul behind X, seized the moment to jest at his social media counterpart’s predicament. Taking to X, Musk wryly remarked, “If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working.” Shortly before 11 a.m. ET, the official @X account on the platform added a subtle jab, stating, “we know why you’re all here rn.”

Recurrence of Outages: Meta’s History with Technical Glitches

This outage isn’t the first of its kind for Meta. Previously, in October 2021, when the company was still known as Facebook, a similar multi-platform outage occurred, lasting approximately six hours. During this episode, various Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, experienced disruptions. A company executive attributed the incident to “a faulty configuration change” within the backbone routers managing network traffic across data centers. This outage marked the longest period of downtime for Facebook since March 2019, when the platform encountered a 24-hour disruption affecting multiple apps.
