Facebook and Instagram Service Restored After Global Outage

Meta announces service restoration: Facebook and Instagram were down for several hours

(CNN) – Meta platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, experienced a widespread outage for thousands of users worldwide this Tuesday, spanning about two hours.

Technical Glitch Disrupts Facebook and Instagram Services

Up to 500,000 Facebook users in the United States reported issues logging in or accessing the site mid-morning, Eastern Time, this Tuesday, according to Down Detector, an outage tracker. Around 50,000 outage reports were filed on Instagram and another 10,000 on Facebook Messenger, although the number of reports began to decline an hour after the initial reports.

Resolution of the Technical Issue by Meta

By Tuesday afternoon, Meta had resolved the issue, which was reportedly caused by a “technical problem,” as the company announced.

“Hoy, a technical issue made it difficult for people to access some of our services,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone tweeted. “We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for all affected users and apologize for any inconvenience.”

During the morning hours, some users found themselves logged out of their Facebook accounts. Others received notifications on Instagram stating “something went wrong,” and their feeds couldn’t load.

Meta Accused of “Massive and Illegal” Data Processing by European Consumer Groups

Threads, Meta’s competitor to Elon Musk’s X, also experienced an outage and displayed a pop-up window for users stating “Something went wrong, please try again later” instead of their feed.

Meta’s status page on Tuesday displayed “major disruptions” affecting Facebook login as well as some other areas of the platform.

“We are aware that people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now,” Stone had said earlier, also in a tweet on Tuesday.

Infrequent but Significant Platform Interruptions

Major platform interruptions occur infrequently but are typically the result of issues such as a software update problem. Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp were offline for nearly six hours in 2021, an outage the company said was not due to malicious activity.

Service outages are fresh in the minds of many US consumers after AT&T experienced a network outage of nearly 12 hours at the end of last month, leaving many customers unable to make calls, send texts, or access the internet from their mobile devices.
